The menu reads like a love letter to noodle lovers: silky, perfectly cooked soba and udon are the stars, ranging from the robust Soba Noodles Curry Beef Udon and delicate Snow Crab Udon to refreshing, bright dishes such as the Salmon Ikura Soba Cold Noodle and Spicy Japanese Cold Tofu Soba. The experience feels personal, almost familial.
Despite its popularity and no-reservations policy, the wait is well worth it; anticipation only heightens the pleasure of finally indulging in these culinary delights. Whether you’re craving a comforting hot bowl of beef sukiyaki udon, a refreshing chilled tenzaru soba during warmer months, or a side of truffle fries and shishito peppers to complement your meal, Somenya Boston proves itself a standout destination for noodle aficionados and adventurous eaters alike.
In all, Somenya Boston offers a thoughtful, richly flavored, and soul-satisfying dining experience that transports you straight to Japan with every bite, while celebrating Boston’s own diverse palate. For those seeking authentic flavor paired with heartfelt hospitality, this is a must-visit gem.
Our favorite spot for Japanese Udon and Soba in Boston thus far! They have most of the traditional options, but they also have some interesting Korean fusion dishes. The noodles were cooked perfectly, and the mentsuyu and broths had a good balance of flavors. Service was friendly, and prices were reasonable. Reservations not available, so be prepared for a wait if you come around dinner time.
We had an excellent experience at Somenya. The food was outstanding from start to finish—everything from the appetizers to the entrées, and even the tea, was thoughtfully prepared and delicious. What truly set this visit apart was the care they took with my girlfriend’s food allergy. The staff was extremely knowledgeable about the menu and communicated clearly and confidently with the kitchen. Only moments after our order was sent back, they returned to let us know the chef had identified one item as unsafe for her allergy and asked if we’d like to choose something else instead. That level of attention and proactive communication was impressive and very reassuring. Great food, attentive service, and genuine care for guests’ needs. We’ll absolutely be back.
Honestly, major vibe. We really enjoyed our meal here! Food was spectacular. The person who took our order was also really kind (I didn’t want my poached egg and so they added it to my friend’s meal for free since he did want a poached egg extra on his rice bowl).
Such a hidden gem in the busy city. Walking in, I felt like I was at a mom and pop restaurant in a small village in Japan. I truly love the unique charm of the decoration! I had an appetizer- crispy squid tentacles and it was good. The soda I got was also tasty! I will go back to try other food for sure!
Hot and cold noodles—something for everyone! This place has been on my list for a while and finally made it here. It didn’t disappoint. Service is warm and attentive, decor is cheerful, and they use beautiful Japanese ceramics to serve everything. I was blown away by the flavors. As a big fan of cold noodle dishes from around Asia, I don’t think there’s a better meal in the warm months and Somenya has an extensive menu of cold as well as hot noodle dishes with udon or soba. I also really enjoyed appetizers of salmon tartare with a great yuzu marinade and the takoyaki had large chunks of octopus inside with a gooey dough. Definitely go try out this gem if you enjoy cold noodles. I believe it’s the only place in Boston/Cambridge with cold noodles.
A must-visit noodle shop in my opinion - unmatched ambiance, delicious soba and udon noodles, available in an unbelievable number of preparations, each as tasty as the last. Good vegetarian options to choose from as well. Great sake and beer to complement the meal as well.
It was great! I ordered the duck roast soba while my friends got the beef sukiyaki udon and another soba dish. The decorations were very pretty and food was good in my opinion. I liked the giant ladles they give you to eat it with. 7-8/10, though one of my friends didn’t like the broth. Staff were also quite nice!
